Byrnes Art Gallery and Violin Shop
Byrnes Old Shop is a protected structure dating back to the late 18th Century. It was one of the first buildings on Parliment Street; built around 1790. It started it's life as a pub and shop and in 1898 became the business and home of Thomas Byrnes, a draper, and his young family.
In 1908 Thomas became a relieving officer and retired in 1932. Following his death in 1937, his daughters, Biddy and May ran a small shop selling magazines, comics, ice-cream and sweets. You could buy one cigarette there on your way to school. May also ran a lending library from the shop.
The last of the Byrnes sisters died in 2009 aged 95 years.
In 2014, the shop sold and was lovingly restored and conserved by Brendan P. Lynch.
Brendan is a musician, artist, author and town planner. The shop now operates as Irelands only Violin Shop and Watercolour Gallery selling top class violins and original watercolours. Brendan also offers a repair service for violins and other stringed instruments.
The original shop and hearth room are a rare surviving example within the town.
It is hoped to hold small folk music sessions during the summer season.
